The Royal Doulton Duke of Wellington Character Jug D6848 is a great character jug that combines historical significance with craftsmanship. Part of The Great Generals Collection, this jug stands at 7.25 inches and was produced in a limited edition of 5,000 pieces, designed by William K. Harper and issued in 1989. It was commissioned from Royal Doulton by UKI Ceramics.
Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), was a key British military leader and statesman known for his role in defeating Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and serving as the Prime Minister from 1828 to 1830. The jug showcases a blue and gold color scheme that highlights its detail and design. The handle features a Canon and a pennant with the words WATERLOO on the front, the back of handle has the reverse of the canon and pennant.
The base does mention that the jug was the first in a series of 10. However, there were four character jugs in the Great Generals Collection: Duke of Wellington, D 6848; General Gordon, D 6869; General Eisenhower, D 6937; and General Patton, D 7026. The later jugs were made in much lesser numbers with the second and third made in edition sizes of 1,500 and the final made in an edition size of 1,000. All four jugs were designed by William K. Harper.
