The Royal Doulton Samuel Johnson Character Jug, designed by the esteemed Harry Fenton, pays homage to one of the most iconic figures in English literature, Dr. Samuel Johnson. Introduced in 1950, both the large (reference 6289) and small (reference 6296) versions of this jug captured the essence of Johnson’s intellectual and physical presence. Dressed in a dark brown hat and adorned in robes of light brown, maroon, and white, the jug presents Johnson in the dignified attire befitting a man of his stature. It would have been nice to have a more interesting handle.
Withdrawn in 1960 and although not uncommon the Samuel Johnson Character Jug is harder to find than some character jugs.
