The Royal Doulton Character Jug of Friar Tuck was designed by Harry Fenton in 1951 and was in production until 1960. This jug, model number D6321, was only produced in the large format, measuring 16.5 cm in height. Fenton’s design captures the jovial and friendly nature of Friar Tuck, a well-known character from the Robin Hood legend. The jug depicts the friar with a round face, dressed in traditional brown woodland attire, symbolizing his life in the forest.
A clever touch to the jug’s design is the use of a branch as its handle, enhancing the woodland theme that is further emphasized by the green-tinted leaves at the top and back of the jug. The combination of natural elements and the characteristic warm expression of Friar Tuck has made this jug a beloved collectible.
Friar Tuck is one of the famous Merry Men who accompanied Robin Hood in his adventures in English folklore. Known for his cheerful and sometimes rebellious nature, Tuck was a former monk who left his religious duties to join Robin Hood’s cause of robbing from the rich to give to the poor. In many stories, Tuck is portrayed as a good-natured man who enjoys food and drink but is also skilled in combat and fiercely loyal to his comrades.
Friar Tuck in Literature
One of the earliest literary references to Friar Tuck comes from “The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood” by Howard Pyle (1883). In this version, Robin Hood encounters Friar Tuck and challenges him to carry him across a stream. After a humorous scuffle, Friar Tuck gets the upper hand and says, “Now, good youth, carry me back again!” The scene showcases Tuck’s wit and strength, highlighting his playful yet formidable nature. This depiction of Tuck as both humorous and skilled in combat has become a lasting part of his character in the Robin Hood folklore.
