The Royal Doulton Character Jug “Jarge” captures the essence of a quintessential country bumpkin in the form of a hardworking farmhand. Released in 1950, Jarge was designed by Harry Fenton and offered in two sizes: a large model (D6288) and a smaller version (D6295). In this Jarge Character Jug information and price guide we look at the background of jug and some realised prices at auction.
The Jarge jug features the character with a characteristic piece of straw in his mouth, embodying the rustic, rural charm of a bygone era. Jarge’s attire and expression convey a life of simplicity and outdoor labour, representative of the pastoral life in the English countryside. He sports a white scarf with red polka-dots around his neck which then goes on to form the jug’s handle. He wears a black hat with orange hair, in some variations the hair is a darker orange/red colour. He may also be missing a tooth or two. The reverse of the scarf features the word Jarge. The jug measures around 6.5 inches.
Available for a decade, Jarge remained in production until 1960 when it was officially withdrawn. Over those ten years, it became a beloved figure among collectors and enthusiasts of Royal Doulton’s work, prized for its portrayal of a traditional rural figure with warmth and a touch of whimsy.
The smaller version measures 3 inches high and features the same country bumpkin character wearing polka- dot scarf and piece of straw in his teeth. I always think the head of the smaller version is better proportioned.
Price Guide
Discontinued in 1960, Jarge jug is a classic Doulton jug but the current market is extremely weak. For a design that was only produced for ten years and discontinued over sixty year ago it can be acquired at auctions for pounds and you will normally have to buy it with other jugs.
Large version £10-£20
Small version £10-£20
