Royal Doulton Uncle Tom Cobbleigh Character Jug information and price guide

The Royal Doulton character jug Uncle Tom Cobbleigh (D6337), designed by M. Henk, was introduced in 1952 and withdrawn in 1960. This large jug depicts a cheerful, rustic figure from the much-loved West Country folk ballad Widdicombe Fair, a song that has been sung across England since the early 19th century.

The song tells the tale of Tom Pearse, who is persuaded to lend his grey mare to a group of friends—Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer, Peter Gurney, Peter Davey, Dan’l Whiddon, Harry Hawk, and old Uncle Tom Cobbleigh and all—to attend Widdicombe Fair in Devon. The famous refrain “Uncle Tom Cobbleigh and all” has entered English vernacular as a phrase used to describe a long list of names or people. Legend has it that the poor mare dies during the journey, and in later versions of the tale, her ghost haunts the Devon lanes. A tombstone in the churchyard at Widecombe-in-the-Moor reads: “Thomas Cobley, age 96, 6th March 1794.” While it’s uncertain if this Thomas Cobley was the original inspiration for the character, the local connection adds to the song’s folklore.

The Royal Doulton jug captures Uncle Tom’s rustic charm with expressive facial detail, a traditional countryman’s hat, and a jovial expression. The words Uncle Tom Cobbleight are carved to the reverse of the jug, and the handle is made to resemble an horseshoe. Early versions of the jug have been noted to feature a pure white colour palette for his hair, making them highly desirable among collectors for their rarity.
