The Royal Doulton Character Jug of St. George was designed by Max Henk in 1968 and remained in production until 1975. This jug was created in two formats: a large model, reference number D6618, standing at 18.5 cm tall, and a small version, reference number D6621, measuring 9.5 cm high. St. George is depicted in his traditional knightly attire, wearing a white tunic emblazoned with the iconic George Cross, symbolizing his role as England’s patron saint.
He is also shown with a silver-grey helmet and a blue/cyan chainmail, while his bright blonde hair adds a striking contrast. The most distinctive feature of the jug is its handle, which is intricately designed in the shape of a dragon, a nod to the famous legend of St. George slaying the dragon. This handle has become a favourite among collectors.
The Legend of St George
The legend of St. George and the Dragon is one of the most enduring tales of chivalry and heroism. St. George, who lived during the 3rd century AD, was a Roman soldier of Greek descent and became a Christian martyr. He is best known for the legendary story in which he defeats a ferocious dragon to save a town and its people.
In the story, a dragon terrorizes a kingdom by demanding tributes of sheep and eventually human sacrifices. When the local princess is selected as the next offering, St. George intervenes. Armed with his faith and his sword, he confronts the beast in a fierce battle, ultimately slaying it and rescuing the princess. In many versions of the tale, the dragon’s death leads to the conversion of the town’s people to Christianity, cementing St. George’s status as a symbol of good triumphing over evil.
Though the story is a blend of fact and legend, St. George’s association with bravery and selflessness led to his veneration throughout medieval Europe. He became the patron saint of many nations, including England, where his symbol, the red cross on a white background, became the flag of St. George. His feast day, celebrated on April 23rd, is still observed in several countries around the world.
