The Yachtsman Character Jug from the First Canadian Royal Doulton Show

At the inaugural Canadian Royal Doulton Show held in Durham, Ontario in 1988, collectors were introduced to a striking new addition The Yachtsman Character Jug, a large jug designed by Stanley James Taylor. Crafted in a limited series of 750 pieces, this jug became a prized collector’s item selling out quickly. It stands 17.5 cm high and features a distinct nautical charm.

The Yachtsman features the confident image of a yacht captain dressed in a crisp blue jacket, a sunny yellow shirt, and a smart grey cravat. His sailor’s hat, adorned with the initials ‘YC’ for Yacht Club, adds a personal touch, while his expression conveys a readiness to face the open seas.

The jug’s handle is particularly noteworthy: modeled as a full sailing yacht, it seems to race the wind, its sails billowing and the top mast flag fluttering spiritedly. This dynamic element not only enhances the jug’s aesthetic appeal but also celebrates the joys of sailing. We do like this handle.

Variations have been seen including a rare prototype, which feature gold and silver lustred highlights and bear a unique ‘not for resale’ backstamp.
