Crafted by Royal Doulton artist Geoff Blower, the jug portrays the legendary Pied Piper of Hamelin and was originally issued between 1954 and 1981. We really like this colourway – the black and green gives the Piper a more serious tone and the black rats are very appropriate.

The jug’s handle is designed as a silver-toned pipe, adorned with three black rats, symbolizing the famous legend of the Pied Piper. In this medieval tale, the town of Hamelin in Germany was plagued by a rat infestation. The Pied Piper, a mysterious figure dressed in colourful attire, arrived and offered his services to rid the town of the pests. Playing a magical tune on his pipe, he lured the rats to a river where they drowned. However, when the townsfolk refused to pay him, the Piper retaliated by using his pipe’s enchantment to lead the town’s children away, never to be seen again.
This rare black and green colourway jug highlights the mystique and allure of the Piper, bringing to life both his charm and darkness. With its detailed craftsmanship, it showcases the iconic Royal Doulton approach to storytelling through ceramics. Rare colour variants like this one are highly coveted, and the unique backstory of the Pied Piper legend only enhances its appeal. This sale reinforces Royal Doulton’s legacy in collectible ceramics, with pieces that continue to attract high values and collector interest.
